Census of First Returned Exiles

Now when the wall was rebuilt and I had installed the doors, and the gatekeepers, the singers, and the Levites were appointed, then I put Hanani my brother, and Hananiah the commander of the citadel, in charge of Jerusalem, for he was a faithful man and feared God more than many. Then I said to them, “The gates of Jerusalem are not to be opened until the sun is hot, and while they are standing guard, the gatekeepers are to keep the doors shut and bolted. Also appoint guards from the inhabitants of Jerusalem, each at his post, and each in front of his own house.” Now the city was large and spacious, but the people in it were few and the houses were not built.

Then my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials, and the other people to be enrolled by genealogies. Then I found the book of the genealogy of those who came up first, in which I found the following record:

These are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had taken into exile, and who returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his city, who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah.

Walking In The Word

Jerusalem’s wall was complete, yet there was still more work to do to get Jerusalem functioning again. Nehemiah was good at getting people in the right place to work and getting them to do the work despite the obstacles. He made a count of everyone that was available, checked their background and qualifications, and put them in the right place to serve.

God has gifted each Christian with time, skills, and abilities to use in the service of the Kingdom. We use these gifts to serve in our homes, communities, places of work, and churches. If each person does his part, then the work gets done easily and efficiently. But if only a few do their part, the work becomes too heavy of a burden. Too often in churches there are a faithful few who carry the bulk of the serving load. This is not what God intended! He designed each person to do his part to make sure the work gets done with excellence and to have time to manage other areas of life.

Are you doing your part to serve your church, or are you sitting idle while others carry a load meant for you? If you are idle and fit for service physically and spiritually, it is time to do your part! We may need times of rest because of overwork and lack of balance; but once the time of rest is done, we are expected by God to serve His people.
