Christ Died Once And For All

In The Word

Read: Hebrews 10:1-18

One Sacrifice of Christ Is Sufficient

10 For the Law, since it has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the form of those things itself, can never, by the same sacrifices which they offer continually every year, make those who approach perfect. Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have had consciousness of sins? But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. Therefore, when He comes into the world, He says,

You have not desired sacrifice and offering,
But You have prepared a body for Me;
You have not taken pleasure in whole burnt offerings and offerings for sin.
Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come
(It is written of Me in the scroll of the book)
To do Your will, O God.’”

After saying above, “Sacrifices and offerings and whole burnt offerings and offerings for sin You have not desired, nor have You taken pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the Law), then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will.” He takes away the first in order to establish the second. 10 By this will, we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all time.

11 Every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins; 12 but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time onward until His enemies are made a footstool for His feet.14 For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. 15 And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us; for after saying,

16 This is the covenant which I will make with them
After those days, declares the Lord:
I will put My laws upon their hearts,
And write them on their mind,”

He then says,

17 And their sins and their lawless deeds
I will no longer remember.”

18 Now where there is forgiveness of these things, an offering for sin is no longer required.

Walking In The Word

Hebrews 10:1-18 powerfully contrasts the old covenant’s sacrifices with the new covenant established by Jesus Christ. The law, was merely “a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves” (v. 1). Year after year, priests offered the same animal sacrifices, but these could never make perfect those who drew near to God. As verse 4 declares, “It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.” No matter how diligently the people followed the law or how many animals were sacrificed, true perfection and sanctification remained out of reach.
This is the heart of the passage: our efforts, however sincere, fall short. Following rules and rituals could remind us of sin but never remove it (v. 2-3). The old system pointed forward to something greater—a perfect sacrifice that would accomplish what the law could not.
Enter Jesus Christ. Quoting Psalm 40, the writer shows Christ declaring, “Here I am… I desire to do your will, my God” (v. 5-7). By offering His own body “once for all” (v. 10), Jesus did away with the first covenant to establish the second. Verse 14 captures the glorious result: “For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.” We are made perfect and sanctified—not by what we do, but by what He did on the cross.
This truth liberates us. We are set apart as special, forgiven and justified, through His blood alone. It’s not that we abandon efforts to live rightly; faith in Christ naturally produces good works. But perfection comes from resting in His finished work, not our futile striving. He is our only hope for true forgiveness.
Believing in Jesus brings that deep longing we all have: to feel clean, accepted, and right with God. When we place our failures, struggles, and sins under His blood, something transformative happens—we feel alive, free, and joyful. The Holy Spirit witnesses to this new covenant: God puts His laws in our hearts and remembers our sins no more (v. 15-17). Where full forgiveness exists, no further sacrifice is needed (v. 18).
Today, seek perfection in faith in Jesus and His cross, not in your own strength. Trust Him alone, and experience the peace of being fully accepted by God.
