We Need Reminding

In The Word

Read: 2 Peter 1:12-21

12 Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them and have been established in the truth which is present with you. 13 I consider it right, as long as I am in this earthly dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder, 14 knowing that the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15 And I will also be diligent that at any time after my departure you will be able to call these things to mind.

Eyewitnesses

16 For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such a declaration as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory: “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well pleased”— 18 and we ourselves heard this declaration made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.

19 And so we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts. 20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture becomes a matter of someone’s own interpretation, 21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

Walking In The Word

How many of you have ever had to remind someone of something so that they would not forget? How many of us parents have to remind our children about chores, the way they should act, or how to treat strangers and their siblings? How many of us have had to be reminded about doing something or we would have forgotten? The fact is: we all have to be reminded of things from time to time. God knows we need reminders throughout life. It’s one of the reasons He gave us the experience of communion; it is a reminder of what Christ did for us.

Have you ever forgotten to do something that you knew to do? Then someone comes up and reminds you of what you forgot. What do you say? You tell them, “I knew that.” It’s not enough to get the knowledge, but we have to be reminded of that knowledge from time to time. That’s one of the reasons we are to go to church weekly, so that the pastor can remind us mostly of things we already know. A counselor’s main job is reminding people of what the Bible says. If we stop and meditate for a moment, we have someone else that is also reminding us about our chores, the way we should act, how to treat strangers and our siblings: the Holy Spirit within us. Yeshua told the disciples that the Holy Spirit would remind them of things they already knew. He does the same for you and me. Don’t get upset when you have to be reminded; it’s a normal process of life. By the way, don’t forget that we follow the One True God!
