Heirs and Sons

In The Word

Read: Galatians 3:19-4:7

19 Why the Law then? It was added because of transgressions, having been ordained through angels by the agency of a mediator, until the seed would come to whom the promise had been made. 20 Now a mediator is not for one party only; whereas God is only one. 21 Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? May it never be! For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law. 22 But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

23 But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed. 24 Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. 26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.

Sonship in Christ

Now I say, as long as the heir is a child, he does not differ at all from a slave although he is owner of everything, but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by the father. So also we, while we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental things of the world. But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.

Walking In The Word

Paul declared that salvation through Yahshua provides redemption and freedom from sin; this redemption gives us the ability to be a son of God, with all of the rights and benefits of an heir to God’s kingdom. We can now enjoy all of Father God’s promises, including freedom, protection, provision, hope, joy, fulfillment, a life of meaning, and a personal relationship with Him. The key to the promises of both salvation and an abundant life is to have faith that they are real and that they come through our salvation in Yahshua. The Christian faith is concerned not just with the life hereafter in Heaven, but also with life now, here on earth.

Father God sent not only His Son, but also the Spirit as all three members of the God-head are involved in the work of salvation. Because you are an heir and a son or daughter, God gave you His Spirit as a gift to prove your position in God’s family. The Spirit motivates every believer to pray by addressing God as, “Abba! Father!” (Galatians 4:6, Romans 8:15). “Abba” is an Aramaic word that is like the English word “Daddy,” which shows intimacy and trust, and was used by Yahshua in Mark 14:36.

Paul concluded the thought of son-ship in Galatians 4:7 when he changed the plural forms in verse 6 to the singular “heir” and “son”; this change indicates that this is real and personal to you. God loves YOU, Yahshua died for YOU, the Spirit lives in YOU, and God’s abundant life is for YOU! Have faith that this is true.
