The Old and the New

Now even the first covenant had regulations for divine worship and the earthly sanctuary. For a tabernacle was equipped, the outer sanctuary, in which were the lampstand, the table, and the sacred bread; this is called the Holy Place. Behind the second veil there was a tabernacle which is called the Most Holy Place, having a golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was a golden jar holding the manna, Aaron’s staff which budded, and the tablets of the covenant; and above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the atoning cover; but about these things we cannot now speak in detail.

Now when these things have been so prepared, the priests are continually entering the outer tabernacle, performing the divine worship, but into the second, only the high priest enters once a year, not without taking blood which he offers for himself and for the sins of the people committed in ignorance. The Holy Spirit is signifying this, that the way into the holy place has not yet been disclosed while the outer tabernacle is still standing, which is a symbol for the present time. Accordingly both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make the worshiper perfect in conscience, 10 since they relate only to food, drink, and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until a time of reformation.

11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things having come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made by hands, that is, not of this creation; 12 and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all time, having obtained eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled, sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

15 For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the violations that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

Walking In The Word

The book of Hebrews vividly contrasts the old covenant with the new, revealing how Jesus fulfills and surpasses everything that came before. Hebrews 9:1-15, describes the earthly tabernacle under the first covenant—a structured place of worship with its Holy Place and Most Holy Place, where priests offered repeated sacrifices that could only provide external cleansing (vv. 1-10). These rituals, involving blood of goats and bulls, could not truly perfect the conscience or grant lasting access to God.
But then comes the glorious turning point: “But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here…” (v. 11). Jesus, our great High Priest, entered the heavenly sanctuary—not with the blood of animals, but with His own blood—once for all, securing eternal redemption (v. 12). The old sacrifices offered temporary, outward purification, but Christ’s blood, offered through the eternal Spirit, cleanses our consciences from dead works so we can serve the living God (v. 14).
Jesus Christ is the great Mediator between humanity and God! He perfectly fulfilled the regulations of the first covenant by offering Himself as the ultimate, unblemished sacrifice for our sins. Through His death, He established the new covenant, redeeming us from transgressions and enabling those who are called to receive the promised eternal inheritance (v. 15). Because of Him, we have life in Christ and eternal peace. We now offer true, divine worship through Jesus and His blood, and our Heavenly Father receives us because of what He has done.
One of the most precious gifts we receive is a clear conscience. The blood of Christ washes us clean—as white as snow—lifting the burden of guilt and bringing deep, personal peace that the old system could never provide. No longer do we need repeated rituals; His one sacrifice is sufficient forever.
I encourage you today: Receive fully what Jesus Christ has accomplished on your behalf. Let go of past failures and sins. If God has removed them as far as the east is from the west (Psalm 103:12), who are we to cling to them? Release them into His merciful hands. Allow the Prince of Peace to flood your heart with real peace and unshakable hope. In Christ, the old has passed away—embrace the new life He offers. Trust in our great Mediator, and live in the freedom and joy of His eternal redemption.
